Snooks Bottom is located just south of Fruita Colorado and is nestled nicely between Opal Hill and the Colorado River. Te area used to be a popular late night hangout for the younger generation but the city of Fruita and the BLM has done a nice job fixing the place up and making it nice. The trailhead not only supplies access to Snooks Bottom but to Opal Hill and the Devils Canyon trail system as well. Right next to it is a good size disc golf course also.
To access the trailhead you can travel west from Grand Junction on I-70 to the Fruita exit. Turn left and travel about 1.5 miles to Kingsview Estate, there is also a sign indicating Horse thief State Wildlife Area. Turn right and drive through the small subdivision. At the turn where the road turns to gravel there is a road that branches off and travels towards the river. Follow this road a short distance to the trailhead.
The trail is a relatively flat easy loop that circles around a pond. Overall it’s about a mile round trip. The trail begins by going down a gentle slope to the lake itself, from here you can either go right or left, I chose left. The trail follows a fairly smooth old road along the base of Opal hill until you come to a Bureau of Reclamation fence and the road turns to a gravel path. The path continues on around the lake and gradually makes its way back to the trailhead. There are various benches along the way where you can sit and relax and ample access to the water to let your pooch do a little swimming.
There’s really not much to say about this short little trail other than if your just out for some exercise or want somewhere to take the little ones this could be a good spot.
