The Canyon Rim Trail is located on the west end of the Colorado National Monument. There is a $15 entrance fee into the Monument that is good for one week. You can also purchase a yearly pass for $40 which is the best way to go if you plan on spending much time in the area.Camyon Rim Trail

The trail head is located directly behind the visitors center. You can either follow the sidewalk outside that goes around the center or go inside, explore the cool little history museum, get some souvenirs and even watch a short film before your adventure then leave out the back door.Canyon Rim Trail

The Canyon Rim Trail is appropriately named due to the fact that the majority of the trail does actually follow along the rim of Wedding Canyon. As you travel along there are numerous places where you can walk right up to the edge, some of these spots have railing but most of the area does not so if you have little ones be sure to watch them very close. It’s a long ways down and a sudden gust of wind or a wet or icy rock could lead to disaster.

As the trail winds its way through the pinion & juniper trees you can get some fantastic views of Independence Monument, Kissing Couple and nearly all the way up Monument Canyon. Be sure to keep an eye out along the canyon floor because you can often times see bighorn sheep wandering around below.

After about the first half mile you will come to the Bookcliffs View. There’s a nice covered area with a bench under it where you can sit and enjoy the view of the Grand Valley and watch the ravens and turkey vultures soar. If you’re lucky you might even see a peregrine falcon or golden eagle.

From the Bookcliffs view the trail exits out the other side and travels along the rim for about another quarter mile where it eventually connects to the Window Rock trail. From here you can turn right and go the 30 feet or so and get an up close view of window rock.

From this point you can either go up and follow the campground road back to the visitors center or turn around and return the way you came. This is a nice easy trail that’s pretty well used and would be great for all ages, you could probably even use a stroller on it for the most part.
