Nut-N-2-It TrailThe Nut-N-2-It trail is located south of Grand Junction and is part of the “Third Flats ATV Trail System” located along the East side of Little Park Road. To access the trailhead from 1st and Grand in Grand Junction travel West on Broadway for approximately .87 miles until you reach Monument Road. Turn left and travel another .17 miles to D Road, turn left here and follow D Road until it turns into Rosevale Road. Continue on Rosevale Road for another 1.2 miles until you reach Little Park Road on your right. Turn onto Little Park road and follow it for about 4.1 miles. The trail head is located at the second actual road on your left. If you pull into the area you will notice signs indicating that there is no parking. There is a pull off shortly before the trailhead on your right where I parked and it was a short walk up Little Park Road to the trail. If you have a higher clearance vehicle you can drive past the Kiosk and park along the road a little farther in.

As with most of the trail in this area you have to utilize various trails to access other ones. The Nut2it23Nut-N-2-It trail is fairly easy to get on because it only uses the Twist-N-Shout trail. The Twist-N-Shout trail is the first trail on your left that you come to when travelling on the Third Flats Road. You can download a map of the Third Flats Trail System here: Third Flats Trail System

The trail begins by passing through the gate, weaving through the trees and dropping down slightly as it travels along the rim of a small canyon on your left and a hill on your right.

Nut2it6As the trail continues to follow the canyon you are offered some nice views of the Colorado National Monument, the Grand Valley and the Bookcliffs beyond. Since this is a multi use trail be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for mountain bikes and atv’s.

After about .7 miles you’ll come to a branch in the trail. If you turn right you will be on the Short Shot trail which actually connects the Twist-N-Shout trail with the Nut-N-2-It trail. If you’re just looking for a short and quick jaunt, then you can cut across here, otherwise be sure to continue straight and remain on the Twist-N-Shout trail.

The trail continues to twist and turn as it gently climbs in and out of multiple small ravines for Nut-N-2-It Trailabout .77 miles until you come to the trail junction of the Nut-N-2-It trail. At this point you want to turn right and follow the trail as it passes through the trees and drops down into a dry creek bed. The trail actually follows the creek bed for a ways which means if there are heavy rains in or around the area it might be a little difficult to remain on the trail.

The Nut-N-2-It trail runs in a fairly straight north/south direction with pretty much no other routes leading from it so that makes it easy to follow. This section of the trail offers some nice views of the Grand Mesa, Bookcliffs and the Grand Valley.

Nut-N-2-It TrailAfter about .68 miles you will come to the Third Flats Road. At this point you want to turn right and head west back to the trail head. Once on the Third Flats Road it is a quick and easy .75 or so hike back as long as you just stay on the main road.

There is a labyrinth of trails in this area which all have their own and unique features. With such a vast trail system you can easily mix and match trails which will give you nearly endless options for some quality hikes.
